Hike with our professional guide along the great traverse from Stepantsminda along the villages Juta, Arkhoti, Roshka, Shatili and the Atsunta Pass to Dartlo and Omalo in Tusheti.

4 overnight in tents, the other overnights in good local guesthouses. The luggage goes on pack horses.

A great hiking tour with pack horses through the most untouched landscapes of the Caucasus from Stepantsminda through Khevsureti over the Atsunta pass of 3431 meters to Tusheti.

Itinerary

Tbilisi – Jvari – Ananuri – Cross Pass – Stepantsminda – Juta
09.00 Departure from Tbilisi. Central meeting point at Freedom Square at the Old Town Hall (Burberry Boutique)
Via the former Georgian capital of Mtskheta, we head straight towards the Greater Caucasus. After 50 km we make a stop at the beautifully situated Ananuri Fort at the Shinvali Reservoir. We continue towards the Cross Pass at 2400 meters altitude. Here we get a first impression of the Caucasus. After a stop we continue to the well-known town of Stepantsminda (formerly Kazbegi). Sightseeing of Kazbegi and the Trinity Church. Drive to the beautiful mountain village of Juta, the gateway to Khevsureti. Dinner and overnight in a family hotel in Juta.

The luggage is loaded onto the pack horses. Trek through the beautiful valley of the Dshuta River to the Arkhoti Pass at 3200 meters. There is plenty of room for climbing around the fortifications and gazing out over the impressive Khevsurian slopes and valleys. Picnic and hike to the tented camp. Dinner and overnight in tents. Route length 20 km.

After breakfast, there is a long climb through deep gorges towards the Atsunta Pass. Drive to Roshka by vehicle. Hike to the Abudelauri Lakes. Dinner and overnight stay in the inn. Route length 14 km.

Hike to Gudani Ridge. From there vehicle transfer to Shatili.

Hiking tour to the famous Khevsurian fortified city of Mutso and on to the camp at Khonichala. There is plenty of room for climbing around the fortifications and gazing out over the impressive Khevsurian slopes and valleys. Picnic and hike to the tented camp not far from Khonichala. Dinner and overnight in tents. Route length 18 km.

Hiking day towards Atsunta Pass. Distance approx. 12 km

Hike to the pass and cross the Atsunta Pass at 3431 meters, one of the highest passes in Georgia. We have now arrived in the mountainous region of Tusheti and the character of the mountains and valleys is changing. Tent camp below the pass. Distance about 15 km

Walking route down from the stone bridge along Hegho and Girevi to Baso. Distance about 14 km

After breakfast we trek through the beautiful valley of Pirikiti Alasani river along the famous Tusheti village of Parsma. From here it goes steeply up to the Nakaicho Pass at 2950 meters, which offers fantastic views of the various mountain ranges of Tusheti. The way down to Jvarboseli is then very easy. Distance approx. 13 km

Hike from Javarboseli, approx. 8 km, then car transfer to Omalo. On the way stop at the highest village in Europe. Visit to the fortress of Old Omalo Keselo. Overnight stay in the inn

Descending by 4×4 from Omalo to the lush wine region of Kakheti via the Abano Passes of 2870 m over about 4 hours. Wine tasting at a typical family business that produces the wine in the traditional Georgian Qvevri process in outstanding quality.
Continue via Telavi to Tbilisi. Arrive around 6 p.m. end of the journey

Who is the Guide?

The tour guide is our experienced tour leader Tiko Ididze, who is an avid trekker, horse rider and photographer.

What temperatures can be expected?

In August, temperatures range from 14 to 30 degrees in the high mountains of the Caucasus. At night, temperatures rarely drop below 10 degrees.

How is luggage transported?

It is best to stow your luggage in a medium-sized backpack. The luggage is transported partly on pack horses and partly separately in support vehicles.
